here,i'll attempt to clear any misunderstandings regarding the end-resolution for your captured 7xx x 576 .avi's (xx can be 04,20,68,but a disk space saving res. of 480x576 is included in the test too....) if you're using bt8x8 for capturing;
a bit of the background regarding this test;alan.j.pakula is
one hell of a movie director/producer...few days ago i recorded
"to kill a mocking bird" (he produced,r.mulligan
directed) and today i captured "all the presidents men"
(redford/pakula production,pakula directed)....the samples are
from the latter......i was capturing to hdd in 480 x 576 (low on
hdd space) but even so i got short of space so i recorded the
last 50min or so to VHS;you can see that i left a bit of the
movie to overlap (i have same sequence on hdd in 480 x 576 and on
VHS in 7xx x 576...this sequence was used for test...so i can
include 480x576 in the test too....also,this is why you'll notice
that 7xx x 576 samples are a bit more blurred;because they are
VHS rip,and 480x576 is direct tv-rip!but you can also see how
good job my old panasonic VCR is doing (as it's really a small
difference!))
now,after we cleared that one up (and now you know i love pakula
by now..heh),let me show you that input res. doesn't really
mater,because there are no PAR issues on PC and there we only get
square pixels(this test is sparked by discussion in the bellow
mentioned d9 forum thread.......),and bt8x8 is ALWAYS capturing
same amount of usefull video line....
here's the place where this was discussed;

Guide Suggestions"

another hint;your mpeg4 resolution need NOT be 640x480 (off course!) but it can be any 4:3 resolution you pick,OR it can be any resolution period!(with weird resolutions you can correct it on the playback with any player that supports AR changing (i know zoomplayer can,but there are a bunch of them that can do this too.....i'm just using zoomplayer/wmp6.4 and don't have the need for any better;for stuff that needs correcting=zoomplayer,for stuff that doesn't= wmp6.4)
