[dial-up users be warned;432kB worth of jpeg images on this page.......after u saved this page in a "complete" way,you should be able to browse ie.cycle thru images when you find a folder where they reside...that'll be in the same folder where you've saved web page itself and a folder will have same name as web page but with "_files" addition...]
performance of different mpeg4 implementations will be observed in this (by no means definite) test;
1-picvideo mjpeg 4:1:1 source at the quality of "18"......[avs process;768x576(kerneldeinterlace1.33)->576x432(precise bicubic resizing),script loaded to vdub,<Ctrl+1>,bmp(blown to 800x600 for your viewing pleasure, irfanview 3.10 upsizing)->jpeg's by paint shop pro's jpeg optimizer......]

2-avs script encoded with divx5.1(nothing fancy..."psycho" turned off, bitrate is 1500kbit/s(also used for all other mpeg4 variants here)...other settings unaltered....also,as far as i know divx5 lacks any setting that would affect the DCT quantizer matrix,so this is it....if there's a way to alter it adn you know it works OK,get in touch...)

3-avs script encoded with xvid (this one "nic's 16-07-2003_XviD_Install.exe") (also pretty straight forward;no fancy stuff(no GMC,quarterPEL,lumimasking,B-frames etc. all off) only the "MPEG" quantization type was selected, and quantizer for "P" frames "2-7"....)

4-avs script done in nandub (DRF 2-7,1500kbit/s)

notes and observations;all codecs were used in 1pass modes, all codecs were encoding the same avs script, all codecs have acceptable image quality, all codecs had OK filesize predictability.......
nandub snatched this one;xvid got mosquitos as a result of MPEG matrix, but sharpness is not evenly distributed as with nandub encoding (making the SBC winner in overall sharpness too...),divx5.1 still blurs too much (this "feature" is in DXN's work ever since divx4)
few notes on MotionEstimation performance(unvisible in these
images, obviously, but as it is a major question, few notes go
here);again,SBC gets that one too...divx5.1 lags (but progress is
VERY visible since last divx build) slightly while xvid produces
visible "jelly-waving" artefacts,not unlike ones i have
shown HERE
.....if you can live with that,ok..if you can't do yourself an
"nandub favour" or do divx5.1 and sharpen it a bit with
ffdshow or so...
(if there are still some ubelievers about this xvid behaviour,i
can reproduce it very easily, and i also have .avi from where
these images were taken....)
to be fair towards divx5,i'm willing to accept any suggestions (and setings files etc.) that could be used to achieve better sharpness of divx5.1 videos.....if there's any progress,divx5.1 screenshot will be updated..........
(sidenote;divx5.1 decoder wasn't working (was crashing players even after i turned off "auto post processing") so i watched with recent ffdshow, but these screenshots were taken from vdub (ie. stream decoded with default decoders for each stream as vdub know less about dshow(ffdshow and such)decoding....)....perceived image quality when playing that content with ffdshow corresponds witth these screenshots......)
thsi test was sparked by THIS discussion......(still i didn't changed my mind...heh)
